A recent academic paper has thrown new light on the origins of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga, casting serious doubts on its supposed origins.

Sikh Formations: Religion, Culture, Theory

Volume 8, Issue 3, 2012

FROM MAHARAJ TO MAHAN TANTRIC
The construction of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17448727.2012.745303

"As opposed to the official history of Kundalini Yoga that claims it as an ancient and secret tradition prior to Yogi Bhajan's open teaching of it, this article argues that it was a bricolage created by Yogi Bhajan himself...."

Have you read Dr. Trilochan Singh's book from 1977 which is a very good critical analysis of Yogi Bhajan and his practices? The book was a real eye-opener for me! You can download the book for free at: http://gurmukhyoga.com/forum/index.php?mode=page&id=1

Best Book About Yogi Bhajan on the Market, January 3, 2013
By Scott Free - This review is from: Confessions of an American Sikh: Locked up in India, corrupt cops & my escape from a "New Age" tantric yoga cult! (Paperback) & (Kindle only 0.99 cents) http://www.amazon.com/Confessions-American-Sikh-corrupt-ebook/dp/B00ANSWUPM/ref=zg_bs_158529011_1

Gursant Singh's recounting of his passage to India and out of a corrupt yoga empire is as enjoyable as it is compelling. This is a story of exploitation -- Gursant's victimization by his fraudulent master, Yogi Bhajan, and his own demoralizing work running scams to prop up the yogi's luxurious lifestyle. It's a quick-paced adventure that describes the ersatz Sikh lifestyle dumped on a clutch of white Americans and the peculiar dangers of the Indian bride trade.
The book revolves around Gursant's quest for a Punjabi marriage partner. His desire to acquire a subservient wife echoes Yogi Bhajan's tantric babble about men and women. If you've endured a Yogi Bhajan "teaching" on sexuality, you'll be dismayed, but not surprised, by his longtime student's view of women. Gursant's role as Bhajan's aide and bodyguard revealed the man his followers refuse to see -- a womanizer and a brute. Yogi Bhajan's round-the-clock use of a dozen female assistants is well-known. Those who question why the self-proclaimed leader of the Sikhs of the Western world required not just a personal harem but an armed security detail will find answers here. Gursant lays out his time among the sleazy operators and criminal hustlers swirling through Yogi Bhajan's Healthy Happy Holy Organization/3HO in some depth -- not enough intricacy for some of us, but doubtless far too much for the old charlatan's remaining devotees.
Fortunately, the book doesn't devolve into a personal Mea Culpa nor does it read like the diary of a starry-eyed seeker. The bizarre mishmash of Eastern aphorisms and yoga postures that Yogi Bhajan concocted made his Sikh Dharma group appealing to a small, lost tribe of the counterculture. Mercifully, Gursant was no hippie and he doesn't write like one. Yet his "Confessions of An American Sikh" makes the case for Sikh Dharma's inclusion as a footnote to '60s experimental spirituality. More importantly, this book is a fascinating look at the seamy side of the Indian marriage business and a frank exploration of life in a destructive, authoritarian group.
Gursant's tone is appealing whether he is describing the filthy interior of a lock-up in Amritsar or his posh daily luncheons with Yogi Bhajan on Rodeo Drive. His growing disillusionment with Bhajan's bogus spin on the Sikh religion comes to a climax while Gursant is trapped in India. He finds himself trying to emerge from two forms of imprisonment -- one physical and the other spiritual. Through it all, Gursant maintains his sense of humor and his innate faith.
This is an absorbing story for any reader. And it's a must-read for those caught up in Yogi Bhajan's 3HO/Sikh Dharma --ex-followers, Second Generation casualties, family members, law enforcement, cult researchers -- and for every Kundalini yoga student or Yogi Tea drinker, past or present. http://www.amazon.com/Confessions-American-Sikh-corrupt-ebook/dp/B00ANSWUPM/ref=zg_bs_158529011_1

Scholarly report shows Yogi Bhajan's Tantric / Kundalini Yoga is a fraud! KY-YB's own invention!

In this Scholarly report FROM MAHRAJ TO MAHAN TANTRIC The construction of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga, http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17448727.2012.745303 Dr. Philip Deslippe from UC Santa Barbara says “Those closest to Yogi Bhajan and Maharaj Virsa Singh recount…..him telling the group of students in front of Yogi Bhajan that he (Maharaj Virsa Singh) never taught anyone yoga and that yoga had nothing to do with Sikhism”, proving that Yogi Bhajan only dumped Virsa Singh as his guru and mentor because Virsa Singh refused to accept Yogi Bhajan’s hodgepodge of Kundalini Yoga asanas.

Dr. Philip Deslippe’s conclusions can further be summed up thus: “Without the lineage (to kundalini yoga) that he (Yogi Bhajan) claimed and without creating Kundalini Yoga out of whole cloth, Yogi Bhajan is best thought of as neither a lineage holder nor an inventor, but as a bricoleur (a mix of this and that) who brought together elements of different practices and presented them to his students as a distinct entity with a romantic mythology surrounding it.”

Dr. Philip Deslippe also notes Yogi Bhajan’s continuing frauds with the fact that Bhajan spread the myth that the Sikh Gurus practiced and taught Kundalini Yoga! This fraud by Yogi Bhajan is “Like a small restaurant that places mirrors on opposing walls to create the appearance of depth, it is from the singular person of Yogi Bhajan that all information about the lineage and practice of his Kundalini Yoga originates.” Page 383 Note #3 “Some of the many instances in which Yogi Bhajan asserted that the historical Sikh Gurus practiced the same Kundalini Yoga that he taught include classes on 10 June 1971, and 12 January 1976, and undated Kundalini Yoga exercises such as “Indra Nittra Meditation’ and Ong In Virasan (For Negativity)’. In the summer of 1976, an article was written in Kundalini Quarterly by Gurucharan Singh Khalsa and Rama Kirn that claimed that not only did the Sikh Gurus practice Kundalini Yoga, but also the very yogic practice predated them and ‘gave rise to a group of practitioners known as Sikhs’.”

A current Yogi Bhajan student said on fb "if he (Yogi Bhajan) lied about the origins of Kundalini Yoga, Great! "

Gursant Singh's response: Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh "How in the world can you say Bhajan's lies are "Great"! Yogi Bhajan betrayed my trust and all those thousands of yoga students who sought a true spiritual path. When I was in 3HO for 30 years, I thought I was following the ancient and mystical form of the Sikh religion by practicing Bhajan's tantric / Kundalini yoga when in fact YB's tantric / Kundalini yoga has nothing to do with the Sikh religion. The Sikh Gurus never taught or practiced Kundalini yoga or tantric yoga in any form and there was a reason for that. Yogi Bhajan is a fraud and a traitor to his students and all Sikhs alike!

Scholarly report from University professor: Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga sect, "...has not provided particularly easy access to outside researchers..."

Dr. Trilochan Singh’s highly critical appraisal of Yogi Bhajan kundalini Yoga may have prompted Bhajan's 3HO cult to isolate themselves from scholarly researchers. Scholarly report from University professor: Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga sect, "...has not provided particularly easy access to outside researchers..." Dr. Dusenbery says: "This relative lack of significant and sustained attention from scholars may, in part, be due to the fact that 3HO/Sikh Dharma has not provided particularly easy access to outside researchers – especially after Trilochan Singh’s highly critical appraisal of the Yogi Bhajan and his project (T. Singh 1977) and the negative publicity that ensued in the American media (Time Magazine article 1977)." New Academic paper reveals how Tantric / kundalini yoga is Yogi Bhajan's basic faith while Sikhi is only an off-shoot of his Tantric system.

Dr. Stoeber states in his scholarly report:

1. "Sometimes referred to as ‘gora’ (caucasian or ‘white’) Sikhs – they differ from Punjabi Sikhs most significantly in their emphasis on Kundalini Yoga as a key spiritual practice, though they also are contrasted by the special names they are given, by their reverence towards Yogi Bhajan, by their vegetarianism, by the equality granted to women with respect to Sikh ceremonies and attire, and by their dress – they wear all-white clothing and women as well as men wear turbans."

A. Stoeber cites Yogi Bhajan as claiming that Kriyas, as well as impacting the physical, and emotional and mental realms, lead to:

"–spiritual transformation, and becoming open to one’s higher or Infinite Self or Soul in union with God and integrating this spiritual core with one’s mind and body (Bhajan 2007, 101)."

(The Guru Granth teaches that there is no meditation, ritual, or practice that can buy the Divine One's attention and Grace. Nanak repeatedly says: I have no clever tricks or techniques; You are my only hope, O my Beloved One.)

B. Stoeber says that according the Kundalini Yoga theory, breathing impacts people spiritually, as well.

C. Stoeber asserts that "Kundalini Yoga asanas are crucial in stimulating kundalini (spiritual energy), which opens one to an awareness of one’s higher Self or Soul in union with ultimate Reality, and in integrating it with one’s egoic self and psychic personality (Bhajan 2007, 100, 101)."

(The Guru Granth teaches that the Naam is the only crucial thing, but serving the poor and oppressed is good too.)

D. Stoeber goes into mudras and mantras having this and that affect, according to Kundalini Yoga,

"They read and contemplate scriptures, they practice the inner cleansing techniques of yoga, and control of the breath. But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions (lust, rage, greed, pride and attachment). They are increasingly bound to egotism.

This is not the way to meet the Supreme One and Only. I have performed these rituals so many times. Finally I collapsed, exhausted, at the door of my Creator and I prayed to the Beloved One, ‘Please, grant me a discerning intellect’”."

Guru Arjan page 642

Dr. Trilochan Singh made this very same conclusion about Yogi Bhajan, in 1977. I quote from the book "Sikhism and Tantric Yoga": Yogi Bhajan, "...honestly replied that Tantra (White as he calls it) is his basic faith while Sikhism is only an off-shoot of his Tantric system. Dr. Trilochan Singh replies, "The reason he (Yogi Bhajan) gave was that he believed Sikhism has no meditation techniques. I (Dr. Trilochan Singh) told him (Yogi Bhajan) that Sikhism has more specific, fruitful, and spiritually exalting techniques of meditation, but his (Yogi Bhajan) misfortune is that he has never studied Siri Guru Granth Sahib, and never cared to live according to Sikh Discipline."

Dr. Trilochan Singh goes on to say, "from the point of view of Sikh philosophy and theology I would like to state that Yogi Bhajan is using the sacred Sikh mantras and the sacred name of Guru Ram Das as a mantle for his Tantric Sex Yoga which would inevitably lead to mental and physical debauchery of those who take his brand of Sikhism contaminated by crazy sex-energizing asanas seriously. Every Sikh having even rudimentary knowledge of Sikhism, and even every non-Sikh scholar of Sikhism, would agree with me that Sikhs and Sikhism in America will go down the drain if these things continue to be practiced secretly or openly in the name of Guru Ram Das, and with sacred Sikh mantras as instruments of this type of Tantric Yoga which is extremely repulsive to Sikhism." Did Yogi Bhajan get hippies off of drugs with kundalini yoga or was it just young people growing up & needing jobs? Would not most hippies have grown out/aged out of the drug culture/youth culture anyway....?

by Gursant Singh ⌂ @, Yuba City California USA, Thursday, June 13, 2013, 03:15 (4186 days ago) @ Gursant Singh

This video produced by a kundalini yoga student shows 3HO’s view of how Yogi Bhajan saved the hippies from drug addiction & promised “enlightenment”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5rS-2sBgpY&list=UUCJrgfi2Y5OGSpJAeipb-nQ
[image]

An ex Yogi Bhajan follower from the early years of Bhajan's group postulates:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/kamallarose/messages?msg=2263.4

"There were various other things/movements I have heard credit themselves with "getting the hippies off drugs," blah blah blah.

But very seriously -- would not most hippies have grown out/aged out of the drug culture/youth culture anyway....?

Agreed that some didn't -- but 40/50 years later, how many of the ones who didn't are around to tell the story anymore?

In other words: a confluence of a lot of factors - economic, artistic, generational, political, cultural - made the '60s possible; and a lot of the same sources made the '70s and '80s nothing like the '60s. And like a lot of youth movements (the rave movement or goth movement more recently), the motifs fade when people get into an age where they need real jobs and solid relationships.

my cent and a half's worth....

Ari"

Gursant Singh also contends: "While Yogi Bhajan did some good & helped get some people off drugs, Bhajan inducted his followers through lies into a dangerous cult of tantric & kundalini yoga. Dr. Trilochan Singh criticized Yogi Bhajan's practices in his 1977 book "Sikhism & Tantric Yoga", "Yogi Bhajan is using the sacred Sikh mantras and the sacred name of Guru Ram Das as a mantle for his Tantric Sex Yoga which will inevitably lead to mental and physical debauchery of those who take his brand of Sikhism contaminated by crazy sex-energizing asanas seriously." Trilochan Singh, a distinguished Sikh scholar, in his 1977 book “Sikhism and Tantric Yoga,” describes Bhajan devastatingly: “Yogi Bhajan is a Sikh by birth, a Maha Tantric by choice but without training, and a ‘Sri Singh Sahib’ and self-styled leader of the Sikhs of the Western Hemisphere by fluke and mysterious strategy.” There was no mystery to his strategy. He ingratiated himself with the Sikh religious leadership in Punjab, which was more corrupt than the Vatican during the time of Martin Luther.

According to the Tantrics, the best form of worship is the fullest satisfaction of the sexual desires of man, therefore sexual intercourse is prescribed as a part of Tantric worship. In the annals of abuse of women, some had harems, others had concubines and Bhajan had secretaries. The Sikh gurus condemned the Tantrics and their practices. All the cases mentioned in The Register-Guard article “Yogi’s Legacy in Question” had merit.
