Is the Punjabi "Sikh" community so hungry for attention that it doesn't notice being cheapened in the GAP ad?

In this article, Indian author Farzana Versey shows how GAP paired Mr. Waris Ahluwalia with a white model (rather than any other race) for a reason, and apparently the Punjabi Sikh community is so hungry for attention and acceptance in the American fashion consciousness that it doesn't notice being tokenized or cheapened.

It is also really interesting, that she used my birth name, rather than my legal Sikh name, Gursant Singh, the name I've been known by for 2/3 of my life.

Sikhs, Tokenism and Mistaken Xenophobia

The World According to Gap

Gap has managed two marketing scoops within a short period. It got a Sikh model, Waris Ahluwalia, to be the face of its Holiday 2013 campaign, and when one of the hoardings was defaced it scored by acting against the racist attack and promptly posted the ad as its background picture on Twitter.

People who wear Gap could now also wear a halo. Those who did not became potential loyalists. Are people all that easy to please, or are these gestures a great way to divert attention from dealing with the real stuff? Who buys anything only because of the models? Lady Gaga’s piss, the latest gimmick to market it as a limited edition fragrance, is a quirk. continued at: http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/11/29/the-world-according-to-gap/

Gursikhs do NOT want manmat actors like Waris Ahluwalia and other patit (fake) Sikhs as representatives of the Sikh religion either in public ads or leading our Sikh Gurdwaras. Join the protest against the GAP ad! https://www.facebook.com/events/200589616794899/

Just view Waris Ahluwalia's Google images and those of other patit Sikh's who own liquor stores & smoke shops, they also support the Gap ad & do Not following the Sikh Reht or Sikh code of conduct. Shamefully, many of these fake Sikhs control many of our Gurdwars in the United States, this needs to change! Read the comments & view videos by patit Sikhs who support this Gap ad and you'll quickly see how the vast majority use foul language, abuse Gursikhs and shamefully state as in this video link below that they wished they were in the Gap ad with Gap's sexy white model. http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2013/12/04/sikh-group-planning-protest-of-gap-ad-at-davis-store/

EVERY Sikh is representative of the Guru and the Khalsa Panth, especially one who is in the public eye. If they behave in a way that breaches SRM (Sikh Rehit Maryada) the whole Khalsa suffers.
"Jab lag Khalsa rahe niara. tab lag tej dio mai sara.
jab eh gahe bipran ki reet. mai na karo in ki parteet".
"So long as Khalsa retains his distinct identity, I will give him my entire radiance and strength. But if he should take on a non-Sikh way of life, then I shall have no confidence in him and withdraw my support and protection". Guru Gobind Singh Ji
